STOP KISS by Diana Son

Mainstage & Student versions performing in April 2018!

by Diana Son
mainstage production directed by Rachel Tamarin, student production directed by Amelia Huckel-Bauer

After Callie meets Sara, the two unexpectedly fall in love. Their first kiss provokes a violent attack that transforms their lives in a way they could never anticipate.

The regular Red Monkey production of STOP KISS will be directed by RMTG Managing Director Rachel Tamarin. RMTG Education Director Amelia Huckel-Bauer will direct an apprentice version of the show in the same time-frame using the same resources, with a cast of College of Mount Saint Vincent students and other RMTG apprentices, mentored by their counterparts in the main cast.

We can’t wait to share this poignant and funny play about the ways, both sudden and slow, that lives can change irrevocably.

One of the reasons we come to the theater is to recognize ourselves, and Hamlet is an enduring character because people from all walks of life, of all ages and nationalities, have recognized their essential humanity in him. Shakespeare’s language is electrifying because he manages somehow to articulate thoughts that we all recognize as truth, but that we ourselves have never been able to express. We hope out production will convey that sense of emotional, intellectual, and spiritual homecoming to our audience.

By turns hilarious, strange, disturbing, and arresting, Ionesco’s savage commentary on the human condition is a classic 20th century drama. The citizens of a provincial town are gradually transforming into rhinoceroses. One by one, they are forced to confront the nature of their humanity, morality, and individuality.

New Managing and Education Directors

We’re delighted to announce two new additions to Red Monkey Theater Group’s leadership team for the 2017-2018 season: Managing Director Rachel Tamarin and Education Director Amelia Huckel-Bauer.

New Managing Director Rachel Tamarin graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Geneseo in 2013 with a double major in theater and psychology and a minor in women’s studies. Her involvement with Red Monkey began with an internship in spring 2014. She has gone on to work on 13 productions with the company, most recently directing DEAD MAN’S CELL PHONE by Sarah Ruhl in Spring 2017, having previously directed Boise, Idaho as part of the Red Monkey Variety Show. She has served as production stage manager for the past two seasons, including Red Monkey’s recent productions of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, Neil Gaiman’s NEVERWHERE, and SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE ADVENTURE OF THE COPPER BEECHES (in partnership with M&M PAC).

New Education Director Amelia Huckel-Bauer has been a regular on stage for Red Monkey since 2014. She appeared this past season as Hunter in NEIL GAIMAN’S NEVERWHERE. Amelia holds a BFA in Acting from Tisch, NYU and an MA in Educational Theater from Steinhardt, NYU, and she recently founded Elora Theater Arts, an educational theater company.

Previous Red Monkey work includes Sylvia in TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA; Julia Stonor in SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE ADVENTURE OF THE SPECKLED BAND; and Chick in CRIMES OF THE HEART. Other New York acting work includes Beatrice in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING; Titania in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM; and Lucille in John Patrick Shanley’s PSYCHOPATHIA SEXUALIS.

Amelia also teaches at the New York Botanical Garden and lives in the Bronx with her husband and baby daughter.

In her new role with Red Monkey, Amelia will oversee our internship and apprentice program, and coordinate workshops and classes.
